Renewal Rate ~ (count form "gross renewal rate"; value form "dollar renewal rate")
Of the contracts that came up for renewal, the share that renewed.
The fork, why two teams get different numbers
Base and timing fork, plus confusion with retention. Base: count renewal rate
(contracts renewed over contracts up for renewal) vs dollar renewal rate (ARR
renewed over ARR up for renewal), a book can renew 90% of contracts but only
78% of dollars if big accounts leave. Timing: on-time renewals only vs
eventual renewals (a deal that closes two months late), a snapshot at the
renewal date understates, a trailing measurement recovers it. And renewal rate
is often conflated with retention rate, but retention spans all customers
while renewal rate only concerns those in the renewal window.
The trap
Timing distortion is the main lie.
